Microstructural characterisation of as-deposited and reheated weld metal — High Strength Steel Weld Metals
نویسندگان
چکیده
The problems encountered with the interpretation of martensite and the various forms of bainite that are found in high strength steel weld metals have been addressed. Field emission gun scanning electron microscopy was found to overcome resolution difficulties often met with light optical microscopy and conventional scanning electron microscopy. The various microstructural constituents were characterised both in the as-deposited and reheated tempered states. The characterisation of retained austenite and identification of carbide types remains challenging and transmission electron microscopy is required.

Optimization of Ni content in the deposited weld metal composition of E7018-G electrode
In the present study, effect of Ni alloying element on the characteristics of deposited weld metal of E7018-G electrode was evaluated. Therefore, electrodes contained different amounts of Ni (0-1.7wt.%) were designed, manufactured and welded via SMAW process. Microstructural studies revealed dichotomy effect of Ni on the deposited weld metal microstructure, i.e. increasing the Ni content up to ...

متن کاملNew Developments with C–Mn–Ni in High Strength Steel Weld Metals — Part B. Mechanical Properties
Microstructure and properties have been studied for high strength steel weld metals with variations in carbon, manganese and nickel. Based on neural network modelling, experimental welds were made using shielded metal arc welding with manganese at 0.5 or 2.0 wt. % and nickel at 7 or 9 wt. %. Additional welds were made where carbon was varied between 0.03 and 0.11 wt. %. Generally there was very...
متن کاملDevelopment of High Strength Steel Weld Metals – Potential of novel high-Ni compositions
Neural network modelling has been applied to search for novel high strength steel weld metal compositions, potentially offering improved tolerance to variations in the weld thermal cycle. An experimental 7 wt% Ni manual metal arc electrode, formulated on these predictions, was used to produce all-weld metals and welds in high strength steel. Mechanical properties were correlated to weld metal m...
متن کاملInfluence of C, Mn and Ni Contents on Microstructure and Properties of Strong Steel Weld Metals — Part II. Impact Toughness Gain from Manganese Reductions
Two experimental high strength steel weld metals were produced with 7 wt. % nickel and manganese at 2 or 0.5 wt. %. Neural network predictions that Mn reductions increase toughness were confirmed with impact energy increasing from 32 to 113 J at –40 °C. High resolution microstructural investigations showed that both weld metals contained mainly martensite at interdendritic regions and predomina...
